How menopause affects runners

  • Knee, hip & low back pain

  • Reduced balance & confidence on uneven terrain

  • Changing gait, feeling less agile and bouncy and more ‘ploddy’

  • Slower pace

  • Find uphills harder and downhills even worse

  • Weight gain or unable to lose weight despite being active

The great news is that all these issues can be addressed with changes to training and nutrition.

My menopause story

Before and after photo of Gabrielle showing her 30lb weight loss

I was terrible at sports in school, but fell in love with running in my 20s. Mostly I ran along a local river, often with my dad. But when I hit perimenopause, I lost my running mojo and didn’t run for years.

Then life got complicated. I lost my job and my dad.

I struggled with cravings. Didn’t understand my body anymore. My confidence in exercise vanished after suffering with constant aches, pains and injuries. But I realised that my health was the most important thing I had now, and decided to retrain as a personal trainer and find the answers for myself.

Since then, my life has completely changed.

I know exactly what my body needs to thrive at this age (I’m 54 now). I’ve lost 30lb of menopause weight, I’m stronger and fitter than I have ever been in my life.

My love of running came back - In May this year I won my first ever race, a 10 mile trail run in the Lake District - but more than that, I’ve realised how running gives me an incredible sense of freedom and adventure.

I never wanted menopause to stop me or slow me down, and now I have the confidence to see where my body can take me now.

I’m enjoying getting out of my comfort zone and have even booked my first marathon and ultra marathon for 2026.

Today I work as an online strength, fitness and nutrition coach. I am a fully qualified and insured personal trainer and menopause specialist. I help women take back control of their health and fitness so they too can create their own mid-life adventures!
