I’m Gabrielle O’Hare, a personal trainer and lifelong runner. Until perimenopause, when the motivation to run disappeared.
Five years later, by then in my 50s, I was camping in the Alps, gazing up at the trails, and my desire to run again came back as quickly as it went.
Coming back felt amazing. But not for long. The niggles started. I’d get on top of one, then another would hit me. Swollen knees. Cranky tendons. Stiff feet. I could go on.
This wasn’t supposed to happen to me. I was a PT, I did strength training, yet it wasn’t enough. I couldn’t find anyone who could relate to what I was experiencing, or give me advice. So I had to work it out for myself.
In fact, I became obsessed with it.
It wasn’t until I mapped out exactly how menopause was changing me and how that impacted running, that I understood the bigger picture, but I still had more to learn.
Every setback - and there were many - was an opportunity to listen to my body. To ask questions. To uncover answers. When it came to my own training, I stopped letting my ego drive me and started to trust my own instincts.
And things started to change. Once I realised it was possible to improve my speed, my stamina, the distance I could run, without feeling destroyed, a world of possibility opened up in front of me.
I wanted to run faster, further. To cycle. Travel. Explore. Build the confidence to stay out of my comfort zone, and see where that takes me.
For as long as I can remember, as early as in my 30s, I knew I never wanted my age to hold me back. Now, I understand what that takes, and I’m building my training and my lifestyle around that.
And that’s why the Menopause Running Club, and the Performance Reset were born. Because I wanted to share what I’d learned with other women like me, and support them on their journeys.
Along the way I’ve had many coaches and mentors, but in one way or another they fell short of what I was looking for. This is the programme I wish I’d had.
It’s specifically for runners going through menopause, and goes beyond training and nutrition. It’s about learning how to read and respond to our bodies, to get the best out of them. And it’s having incredible results.
It’s transforming the lives of my clients, who are improving their running, seeing and feeling the progress, and enjoying it again.
But more importantly, their confidence is growing as they set their sights on new and exciting goals that make them feel ageless.
